Writing a tell all book - inform people first?

I am writing a tell all about that will make revelations about some people. I fear defamation lawsuits since the people won't like what I have to say. Should I contact these people first or does that seem unethical? What are my best chances to publish without being attacked myself? Is there one? When it is my word against someone else's, what happens with that?

I have a dear friend who wrote an incredible novel about her experiences as a child courier during WWII. She revealed much about her father's second wife in the book. Be very careful with what you are thinking to do. THis woman's family turned against her and claimed that none of what she wrote was true. Some even claimed she could not have possibly been part of the underground. However, She has significant paperwork to prove otherwise and does receive payment to this day for her pain and suffering.

The book? Well the publisher who accepted the work initially held back on the release date and eventually she pulled the book. I have one of the few copies in print. There were 500 issued for a signing. At any rate, if you fear a law suit, I don't think there is a way to stop people from going ahead with it.
