Need Help Structuring a Non-Fiction Book... PLEASE!

I have spent the past few years researching six diaries I have from the early 1900's.  I have found some interesting things about the person, his family and the town in which he lived.  However, I am completely overwhelmed about the amount of information and can't quite figure out how to structure it for a book.  I envision a book about both the person and my research in finding out more about him and his life in 1900.

Chronological straight from beginning to end?  By topic?  Or try to find the story from within and and cut all the dry facts out?

Has anyone tackled a similar project?  Has anyone read a similar book?

I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions!
