Self publishing
Lily60pad Posted: Mon, Jul 6 2009 10:02 PM Reply
I have self published two books of which neither did well dispite all the money spent to get them out.  I am disappointed to say the least.  I was lead to believe that they would help me get the word out and such, but all they did was send me info on what to do.  I am NOT a salesperson and now would like to find a REAL publisher that would be willing to pick up the books and give me a whirl.

I feel you. Im kind of in the same boat. Well atleast, you received information on how and what to do. I am a VICTIM of empty promises....Now I am stuck between a rock and a hard place because I was starting my own publishing business. I don't know what to do now....although it is still something I desire to do.

try lulu.com

they dont promise u anything and u are in control of how your book is published, you can purchase their marketing tools or market it yourself.

What could it hurt?  plus its free.

Thanks very much for the tip about lulu, I've been looking at a book publishing company in houston that I'm interested in - has a book publishers division in the UK, lulu looks good too.

Best, Peter

Lily60pad,

I'm sorry to hear your frustration with your self publishing experience. I'm a self published writer as well, and I can't say enough good things about the process! I published through AuthorHouse and was thrilled by the end product.

One word of advise for you is that your publisher will never be your publicist. No matter which publishing house you work with, that's just not their primary function! An author must be willing to promote themselves as much as their publicist will. I totally understand how difficult that can be especially if you're not a 'people person'.

Even Michael Hyatt from Thomas Nelson teaches that writers have to be willing to be their own promoter! The publisher is the manufacturer of the book, but the author and the publicist give it wings!

Remember, noone can champion your book project like you can...you're its biggest fan! You can do it!! :)
