Attention, Jack Reacher
freaks (and that would include me and my Writer colleague Martha Lundin). In
case you’re a fan of the hugely popular mystery series by Lee Child and missed
the news, the first movie starring Jack, One Shot, is now filming and is expected
in theaters in February 2013.
The 6-foot-5-inch,
250-pound Reacher--that rough-edged “noble loner” and drifter--is being played
by the, uh, rather unimposing Tom Cruise. Significant portions of Reacher
Nation (including Martha and me) have turned thumbs-down on the casting choice,
though perhaps not as extremely as this blog-commenter: “Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher makes about as much sense as Kermit
the Frog playing James Bond.”
Read more about the movie and the author’s take
on it at Lee Child’s website.
Meantime, I got in line the other day at my local
library for Child’s new Reacher novel, his 16th, titled The Affair.
How far down you are on a library’s reserve list is a pretty good indication of
a book’s (and author’s) popularity. In this case, I’m 145th in line
out of 173 holds. Maybe by January?

I'd rather see John Trivalta play Jack Reacher - or, what about Nathan Fillion, from the TV show "Castle"

Patrick Warburton is who I see as Reacher. Physically imposing, handsome, manly, booming voice. He is the physical reality of Brock Samson of The Venture Brothers. But Hollywood is tied to NAME. Without a NAME, there are no movie dineros. Hollywood is a very nervous bunch.

The current casting choice to play Reacher is stupid and does not do the character justice. It must have been done by someone who never read one of the books. One person who could pull it off is Jim Caviezel. I cannot understand why the film industry continues to mis cast such movies and then be surprise when the movie flops.

I wouldn't have thought Tom Cruise either, but I'm willing to take a wait-and-see attitude. Cruise has had some pretty impressive roles that go against type: Born on the 4th of July and Magnolia come to mind.

It's possible that Tom Cruise will do the role justice, but he doesn't match the character described in the book in any way. Lee Child went to the trouble of describing Jack Reacher as being 6'5" and about 240 pounds (I think) -- clearly not Tom Cruise. My front-runner for the role would have been Hugh Jackman.

My vote goes to Hugh Jackman. Jack has the rough edge to his looks and Mr Cruise is way too refined for this.
