Our 2011 Short-Story Contest is open for entries!

“I asked Ring Lardner the other day how he writes his short stories, and he said he wrote a few widely separated words or phrases on a piece of paper and then went back and filled in the spaces.”
~ Harold Ross (founder of The New Yorker) That may be one method of writing a short story, or it may be just a smart-alecky comment from a writer who knows how much hard work it takes to write a good one. Well, here’s your chance to use whatever technique works best for you: The Writer’s 2011 Short-Story Contest is now open for entries! Submit your original, previously unpublished stories up to 2,000 words. The rules and information about how to enter your story are posted online at WriterMag.com/2011contest. The entry fee is $10 per story and the deadline is midnight EST April 30. In addition to the cash prizes of $1,000, $300 and $200 for the top three stories, the winner’s story will be published in The Writer magazine. Our contest partner, Gotham Writers’ Workshop, has generously donated prizes for the top three winners, too. The first-prize winner receives free enrollment in one of GWW’s 10-week online creative writing class ($420 value). The second- and third-prize winners each receive free enrollment in the four-week online seminar, “How to Get Published,” taught by a literary agent and GWW ($150 value). All three winners receive a year’s subscription to The Writer and will have their stories posted on WriterMag.com. This year, we’re honored to have Michelle Wildgen, novelist and executive editor at Tin House, as our judge for the finalist entries. If you need some guidance or motivation to write your story, take a look at these resources:
• Winning stories from the 2010 Short-Story Contest
• Winning stories from the 2009 Short-Story Contest • What makes a good short story?
We're looking forward to reading your stories! Good luck!

Thank you for letting me know so I could correct the errors, MHC! That's what I get for posting in a hurry at the end of the day on Friday. I hope I've fixed them all now.

Hello, Entropy 1!
Thank you for inquiring about our short-story contest. You can go directly to www.writermag.gothamwriters.com to see all the official rules and FAQs (see links at the bottom of the page). Stories are submitted online, so if you are ready to submit a story, you can do that at that first page of writermag.gothamwriters.com. Under the "Contest Overview" section, instruction #1 gives you the link to click on to start the process.
If you have any questions, just e-mail me at contest@writermag.com. Good luck!

Hello, Calanatan ~
Thank you for taking the time to let me know you're having trouble with the links. I think they should be working now, but please let me know if they're still a problem.
