Elfrieda Abbe and I had a great time at this year’s Associated Writers and
Writing Programs conference in Denver. The space was great, with all of the
booths in one massive room, and the enthusiasm and optimism of the
crowd—students, teachers, literary press staffers—was overwhelming. We
enjoyed talking with everyone who stopped by, including many subscribers of The
Writer as well as contributors, including Thom Didato, Lori A. May and Marilyn
Taylor. This is the one event each year that gives us a look at the incredible
diversity in independent and university publishing, and we always came away
with great story ideas and numerous queries from attending writers.
stop: the DIY Authors Conference and Marketplace in New York City, May 24--part
of BookExpo America at the Jacob K. Javits Center. I’ll be speaking on “Get
your manuscript in shape for DIY publication” in a 3:00 breakout session; for
more information, go to our DIY page on The Writer Web site.
