In all the hub-bub of our upgrades to WriterMag.com and the start of our annual short-story competition, it’s easy to forget that we’re in the middle of the Sylvia K. Burack Scholarship competition. The competition, which awards $500 for the best essay written by a full-time college student, is named in memory of Sylvia K. Burack, who was editor and publisher of The Writer
from 1978 to until she sold the magazine to Kalmbach Publishing Co. in
2000. During her tenure, Sylvia was known for her commitment to helping
writers and editors.
This year, we’re looking for a well-written personal essay of 600-800 words addressing the following statement: “Select a work of fiction or poetry that has influenced the way you view the world and the way you view yourself. Discuss the work and explain how it affected you.”
In addition to the $500 cash prize and year's subscription to The Writer, the winner's essay will be published in the magazine. Submissions must be postmarked on or before the deadline of April 1. Please note, you must be 18 or older and a full-time student at a university or college in the U.S. or Canada at the time you submit your essay.
To enter the contest, review the rules and guidelines on WriterMag.com/burack2010. We've also posted winning essays from previous years and an article about writing a personal essay. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at mlundin@writermag.com.
