I think a variety of freelance writers, novices and veterans
alike, will enjoy an article by George Gurtner that we have coming up in our
May issue (due out in early April). George is a veteran magazine columnist in
New Orleans who has a real talent for spotting story ideas in general, and
interesting people to write about in particular.
His article,
built around some impressive examples from his writing life, is about
developing what he calls the special “writer’s sense” of alertness to potential
stories that can be plucked from “everything said and going on around you.”
At talks I
give to beginning freelancers at writing conferences, I tell them they want to
get that “red light” going off on in their brain, alerting them to potential
story material. That red light, to use George’s words, is “the intuition that
makes the freelancer tick.”
I think you’ll find his article interesting and motivating.
