On &lt;em&gt;The New York Times&lt;/em&gt; site, &lt;a href="http://fish.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/16/words-you-hate-to-hear/"&gt;blogger Stanley Fish&lt;/a&gt; discusses phrases that produce &amp;quot;irritation, distress and, in some cases, the desire to kill. You hear or read one of these and your heart sinks.&amp;quot; His favorite expression is &amp;quot;To Be Continued,&amp;quot; as in you&amp;#39;ve invested time and emotion into a TV program, only to be told you have to wait a week or more to find out how the program ends.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He then lists plenty of other phrases that we&amp;#39;ve all heard and dreaded, including &amp;quot;Sold Out&amp;quot; (&amp;quot;when you&amp;#39;ve been waiting in line at a movie theater for 30 minutes&amp;quot;); &amp;quot;Register Closed&amp;quot; (&amp;quot;when you&amp;#39;ve been waiting not-so-patiently behind a fellow customer with 25 items&amp;quot;); and, my favorite, &amp;quot;This may hurt a little&amp;quot; (when &amp;quot;you know that pain and discomfort on a massive scale are just around the corner&amp;quot;).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are the phrases that irk you the most? Fish asked readers to chime in with their own favorites, and more than 900 people did just that. Fun reading!&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&amp;bull; &amp;bull; &amp;bull;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;In the &lt;a href="http://www.thestar.com/living/article/726499--flarf-the-poetry-of-googled-search-terms"&gt;Toronto Star&lt;/a&gt;, I found this interesting opening:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&amp;quot;If your Google search history could talk, would it recite a poem?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The people behind a controversial movement known as &amp;#39;flarf&amp;#39; believe phrases found on the Internet and strung together into poetry provide a critical social commentary. Others think it&amp;#39;s worthless drivel.&amp;quot;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Flarfists (I&amp;#39;m not making that up!) Kate Dawson and Ori Barbut started creating poetry from their friends&amp;#39; Internet search histories--or at least from those friends who were willing to make their histories public. Dawson and Barbut soon had enough poems to self-publish a book, &lt;em&gt;SearchBar History Vol. 1.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other flarfists started a public listserv, &lt;a href="http://mainstreampoetry.blogspot.com/"&gt;Flarf Collective&lt;/a&gt;, so they could write poems for each other. &lt;em&gt;Star&lt;/em&gt; reporter Nicole Baute writes, &amp;quot;Google sculpting emerged as a popular technique&amp;mdash;plugging a term, like &amp;#39;deer head,&amp;#39; for example, into Google and then making poetry from the bits of text that come up on the search page.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;Deer Head Nation,&lt;/em&gt; by Southern Oregon University professor K. Silem Mohammad, happens to be the title of the first full-length book of flarf. After all, order a bunch of books from them and you get a) free shipping b) often a substantial discount off the cover price of a title c) books that come right to your mailbox, avoiding wasted time and gasoline, and d) did I mention the devilishly easy 1-Click ordering?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But enough of this unintended commercial for Amazon. I&amp;#39;m going to give my order to &lt;a href="http://boswell.indiebound.com/"&gt;Boswell Book Company&lt;/a&gt;, Daniel Goldin&amp;#39;s newish bookstore on Downer Avenue in Milwaukee. (It is one of the stores that have replaced the Schwartz Bookshops, which went out of business earlier this year.) Why? Because, like most readers of &lt;em&gt;The Writer&lt;/em&gt;, I want to see non-virtual bookstores stay around, and it won&amp;#39;t happen without giving them business. For us book-lovers, an independent bookstore is a really neat part of the texture of a community, and besides, who wants to browse a computer?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; I&amp;#39;m hoping for a smooth buying experience at Boswell&amp;#39;s. Yes, I may have to special-order a book or two or three there, versus the ease of Amazon ordering and availability, and I may have to hunt around a little for a parking space, but I&amp;#39;m willing to put up with a bit of inconvenience. Kalmbach purchased &lt;em&gt;The Writer&lt;/em&gt; from longtime editor and publisher Sylvia K. Burack, who was looking to retire after her 60-year career at &lt;em&gt;The Writer&lt;/em&gt; in Boston.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I was reminded of this yesterday as I read some of the letters Sylvia received after she announced the sale and her retirement. The competition honors outstanding work by writers in 10 genres. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Barnes is a versatile writer, with two memoirs, two novels, and a whole bunch of critical praise to her credit. Her debut book, the memoir &lt;em&gt;In the Wilderness: Coming of Age in Unknown Country&lt;/em&gt;, was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize. I can&amp;#39;t complain. Unfortunately, the last backup I performed was in March, so I lost seven months of photos and documents&amp;mdash;some of which I was able to recover from e-mails I sent and from sites such as Flickr, where I posted some of the photos. (My writing is all done with pen and paper first, so that was also retrievable.) But the rest was lost forever. Let this be a lesson to all writers out there: Back up your files often!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So an emergency purchase was in order to get me back online. We use Macs at work, which I love for ease of use, but I always assumed I&amp;#39;d have a PC at home. Mobility is important, since I don&amp;#39;t have a fixed spot at home for a desktop, so I went out looking for another laptop. As luck would have it, Windows 7 was just released, and so there were a number of new computers to look at. And yet I ended up with ... a new iMac. It&amp;#39;s light enough to move around (and it&amp;#39;s in one piece, apart from the wireless&amp;mdash;and cordless&amp;mdash;mouse and keyboard). It&amp;#39;s more powerful than the best laptop I saw, and the screen is bigger too. There is less to worry about regarding viruses. It&amp;#39;s completely silent (no annoying fan noise), it&amp;#39;s easy to use&amp;mdash;and it took about 3 minutes to set up. I&amp;#39;m a convert. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Macintosh reportedly has about a 14 percent market share and is especially popular with artists and graphic designers. But do writers favor Mac as well? That got me thinking about how writing is a serious business. There&amp;#39;s nothing funny about writing, even when you&amp;#39;re writing humor. It&amp;#39;s plain hard work. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Humorist-extraordinaire Dave Barry told &lt;em&gt;The Writer&lt;/em&gt; in a &lt;a href="http://online2k.kalmbach.com/wrt/default.aspx?c=a&amp;amp;id=850"&gt;2003 interview&lt;/a&gt; that &amp;quot;good writing is almost always hard, and what I think sometimes happens is that writers forget how hard it is, or don&amp;#39;t want to do the work anymore, and they call this &amp;#39;writer&amp;#39;s block.&amp;#39;&amp;quot; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Barry, whose humor column was syndicated in more than 500 newspapers around the world, won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1988. Although he took an indefinite leave from column-writing in 2004, he is still busy writing. He co-wrote his most recent book, &lt;em&gt;Peter and the Sword of Mercy&lt;/em&gt; with Ridley Pearson (fourth in a series of children&amp;#39;s fantasy books); his next book of humorous essays, &lt;em&gt;I&amp;#39;ll Mature When I&amp;#39;m Dead: Dave Barry&amp;#39;s Amazing Adventures in Adulthood&lt;/em&gt; will be out next spring.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After a busy workweek, we could all use some laughter in our lives.
