Hi, I'm new to writing and this site.

Hello everyone,

I'm Cosmic (not really), I've always wanted to write short stories. I've taken classes (not much help), I've read a bunch of books (not much help either), so, I'm hoping that someone here will help me understand the flow and building blocks of writing short stories. I'm working on a great idea, but, man is it hard to put it in writing. Someone please save me from myself. I welcome any and all input, if anyone will and can help me get started, I'll dance at your next wedding. Well, I just wanted to say hello and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi, Cosmic. Welcome to the forums. The best advice I can give you is to write. Get your story down. Don't worry about whether it's good or bad. I don't know of anyone who gets it right the first time. That's why someone invented the word rewrite. Smile [:)] The next best advice is to read as much as you can in the genre you hope to write in (sci-fi, horror, fantasy, etc.), not just for the storyline, but for how the writer does what he does. I've learned most of what I know about grammar by paying attention to how others do it, especially in dialog. You might consider joining a writing group, either in your local area or online. Every writer has been where you are and knows what you're going through. Hope this helps.

Hey, Cos. Welcome.

One thing that I learned is not to talk about my plot ideas. At least, not until the work of writing is finished.

For me, what would quickly happen is this: my talking about my story ideas would take the wind out of it, and it became a substitute for actually doing the work of writing.

Worse, I found later that I couldn't actually write the story. In a sense, I had already done it.  I hope that makes sense.

Rather than tell people about what I want to write, I need to write it first. Then, when it's ready, share the written story.
