Beginning Freelance

Hi there.

I am a recent college graduate (English major) and I really want to start building a professional writing resume.  I have a small portfolio from some of the things I did in college, but since my alma mater is a small school, there weren't really any writing groups or anything.  The city I live in has a couple of magazines and newspapers published here, but so far monster.com and the local classified's aren't really producing a lot of results for local jobs.   No, relocating isn't out of the question, but I'm married, so it isn't like I could uproot and leave tomorrow.

I would like to do some freelance writing, but I could use some guidance in getting started.  Would it be easiest for me just to do the research, write some articles, and send them off to places? What is the best way to go about it all?  I've thought of writing some book/magazine/food reviews and trying to send them to the local paper or something.  Any thoughts?  Your advise is appreciated!

Re: Beginning Freelance

Writing is a pleasure.  Marketing is not!  Marketing is what your question really is.  One must have a few things to successfully market (in this case YOU)something:  A quality product (assured since you were an English Major), a network of other folks in the industry who you can get leads and ideas from, a good reputation.

Networking and reputation must be built up and that isn't done in the office, it is done by placing shoe leather to pavement.  EH!, if you are an animal activist you can put vinyl to pavement and tell the global warming people to take a hike!  Anyway, it takes time and effort.  Consider "allied" work to pay off the student loans and start building a network.  Any type of job that has any writing requirement can be a stepping stone toward reaching your ultimate goal.  Ad agencies, television and Radio stations, PR offices all use writers.  Think about this: every scrap of paper you see with writing on it was written by a writer. Look at your local pieces of paper and search out the source.  More than likely one of the sources has recently fired a pot-smoking derelict and needs a replacement.

Oh, I almost forgot!  If you are to be successful as a freelancer your FINANCES have to be absolutely golden.  Poor money management skills kill off free lancers more than any other factor.

Good luck, I hope you make enough money to help pay for my social security.

I don't blog. I have 3/4 acre to mow and four dogs to groom and stories to write. Sorry!

Re: Beginning Freelance

Check out these sites--they're very useful to freelancers:

mediabistro.com (commercial site but huge resource)

the-efa.org/ (editorial freelancers association; paid membership)

writersweekly.com (lots of good stuff; free; includes forum with markets)

journalists.org (online news association; great resource; paid memberships)

At my Creative Writer US blog, I have links to writer resources and columns about the freelance biz: http://creativewriterus.blogspot.com/

And check out the Web Savvy column here at The Writer--there's lots of info about writing for the Web, a sector that's proving to be a large part of my own freelance business.

Good luck and hang in there. It's a tough biz but if you stick with it, it's also a very satisfying career.

 best, Kay Day

Visit your bookseller and get a few books on freelancing. They'll be quite helpful. :)

Re: Beginning Freelance

I, too, would like to get into freelance writing.  To that end I have been talking online in various venues.  A few days ago I joined Twitter and sent out a search on the subject.  The amount of information I got back is unbelievable.

Thank you everyone who replied with suggestions on this subject.  I'm soaking it up.
