Hiya, I thought some of you American writers might be interested in these two British publishers I found on UK writers’ websites who are recruiting writers at the moment – I don’t know if they’re advertising in the US so I thought it might be useful to let you know. Hope you’ll all return the favour if you come across any US publishers looking to hire a keen but relatively inexperienced British writer like myself.
Details now pasted, and if anyone can let me know any good job sites for freelance writers, please also let me know.
1) Freelance Writers, Editors & Reviewers for new Arts & Culture Website
US-UK Review is looking for writers who can produce articles and reviews displaying an obvious knowledge, articulacy and occasional humour within their own subjects and writing fields. The new website (us-ukreview.com) launches this April and is now accepting applications from all writers regardless of experience or previous publishing success.
The US recruitment phase will run alongside our UK recruitment in order to bring together a large pool of writers from both sides of the Atlantic to write and review a comprehensive range of subjects ranging from culture, lifestyle, The Arts & showbiz.
You don’t need to be an academic or be gifted in literary brilliance, but what we’re NOT looking for is writing in the style of, for example, local newspapers, tabloids, music mags, reportage, poetry, fiction, instructional or short pieces etc.
What we are looking for in applicants is the ability to write in a reasonably mature but engaging style within their field of knowledge. Our editorial stance is open to all styles ranging from chatty, conversational, quirky, irreverent and humorous to serious and factual.
Experienced editors & editor/writers are also welcome to apply.
Writers will be hired on a freelance basis and can expect fees up to $120 for a single article/review depending on the assignment/other factors, whilst smaller pieces will pay a commensurately lower figure.
Please send your application - something you've previously written, along with your resume – (stating where you read about our recruitment) by email and also post a second hard copy as a back-up. In subject window, please put : “your name/Application” then E-Mail to ; editorial-us@us-ukreview.com and also post hard copy to ; US-UK Review, USA Editorial, 23 Castalia Square, London, E14 3NG, United Kingdom. PLEASE PUT AN "AIRMAIL" STICKER ON YOUR ENVELOPE TO ENSURE QUICK DELIVERY. Deadline March 29th.
And 2) I am writing to you from Notes from the Underground, a new British free creative writing and literary publication with a readership of over 100,000 a month. Our magazine represents the work of both established and unpublished writers. Authors such as William Boyd, Bethan Roberts, Will Self and Terry Jones have contributed to the magazine in the past. We are also keen to cultivate links with international writers as we would like to represent a full spectrum of modern fiction. Writers in the past have been happy to contribute to the magazine not only to promote their work but to lend their support to emerging talent in what we hope is a culturally-beneficial enterprise.
If any of you are interested we would love to hear from you. Our maximum word count is 1800, however we are also very keen to receive even smaller pieces. To get an idea of what we publish you could head over to www.notesfromtheunderground.co.uk to look at our archive. If you'd like to send work in then please send it to info@notesfromtheunderground.co.uk as a word attachment with a word count and your contact details.
Thanks for your time and we hope to hear from some of you,
Chris Day at Notes From The Underground
