"Rights vary," and pen names.

I'm looking into submitting a fiction story to Cricket magazine, which I've loved since I was a kid.  My only concern is that in the submission guidelines, it states that "rights vary" for fiction submissions.  I'd like to have an idea of what I'm getting myself into.  Has anyone encountered similar ambiguity before?

Also, I plan to publish under a pen name.  When/how should I tell the publisher this, if through some miracle I do get accepted?

Enter away. The whole rights thing will be sorted out if you are selected - conversations will be had. At that time, if you don't like the terms, you can withdraw your work. Odds are you can come to some kind of agreement. These discussions would also be the time to bring up the pen name thing, as they should know, and you want the right name on the check so you can actually cash it.

Good Luck -Craven
