The mystery of the missing writers
Hey where are all you Dick Francis, Robert Parker, Agatha Christie, John D. McDonald, Rita Mae Brown fans.  Let's get some action here.  Someone must have something they're working on.  Wait, I'm getting a vision:  It was Mr. Plum in the library with the wrench!

Please, Santa.  Send me a mystery excerpt to read.

On every board I've been on, Mystery and Suspense just doesn't seem to get very many nibbles.  Not sure why, since Mystery is second only behind Romance in popular genres.

John,

Very witty--droll, humorous, clever and sharp.  What do you write, besides these verbal puns?

Re: The mystery of the missing writers
Oh, but I do wish I could write puns well.  Bennett Cerf is my beacon in the literary night.  My problem is I start giggling in my head as I'm writing and it all goes down hill from there.

I try to write good stories, whatever the genre.  There's three parts in Historical Fiction, one in Sci-Fi, several in the challenges.  You'll find a couple deleted, as they were just sitting around collecting dust and I thought I'd slip them back into the manila folder for awhile.

I really, really would like to write a mystery.  Love to be able to follow Linda's leaning and write a thriller.  But the same pun problem comes up.  Instead of giggles however, I get so involved with, "Ooh, Ooh!  I know what's going to happen..."

Mysteries appeal mostly, because I know those wise and wonderful adventurous detectives are all down in Florida, living aboard The Busted Flush and driving poor Travis Magee crazy.  I'd like to pick up just one of the many fallen torches and carry on their authors' traditions.

What's on your platter(s)?

Re: The mystery of the missing writers

Well...

I've got some non-fiction published, but I really want to write fiction.  So I keep writing and re-writing until I get sick of it and start something else.   I like historicals and mystery, usually both at the same time.  I'm attempting a mystery at present.  But it's the plotting that's getting to me.  I feel like I need to know everything that's going to happen and outline it before I begin writing.  And while I'm outlining/plotting, I'll come up with something slightly different (i.e. better) than I had  before.  Everything's got to be changed and the process is endless.

Do writers ever just decide, even if they come up with something "better" somewhere down the line, to just stick with what they've got so as to finish the blasted thing?

I think I'll mosey over and take a look at what you've got in the sections you mentioned.

The mystery writers are probably in the more specialized sites: Mystery Writers of America, Sisters in Crime, DorothyL, and so on -- there are many sites/blogs/forums dedicated to the genre.
