Has anyone self-published? I have and just want to hear about experiences of others.

I have. I've been published "traditionally" and through my own pub-house. What would you like to know? (not trying to be flip, but I could go on for days and days about my experiences and how I feel about them.) :-)

As a book reviewer, I can tell you that I often review self-published books. Some are well done with great story lines and rich characters that are captivating. Others could use a lot of editing before they see the light of day. May I suggest (sorry if this is getting old) that you make sure your story/novel/etc. is edited before self-publishing? If your writing and story are truly worthy, they should not get lost in a sea of misspellings, punctuation errors, and glaring grammatical errors. Let your story shine through -- weed out the, uh, weeds please...

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And good luck. I hope you are wildly successful!

Very good advise and handled in such a supportive way. I had my book edited and proofread, not once or even twice but a few more times and still my book has about a dozen - the ever small errors - the where there should be none - a needed "a" - like that, but enough where I am agonizing over the errors to be read in the book.

YES! Edited is a must by a professional editor - get ready to pay and it's worth it. Proofreader - any answers to what does one do when paying a proofreader there are errors? How has a writer handled this?  I really want to know.

I self published a novel. The publishing co wanted about $2000 to edit it, which I could not afford. It's a pretty decent book, for a first novel, according to most the people that have read it. BUT, after I published I was smitten with self doubt, dissatisfaction about character development, some inconsistency and, of course, the lack of editing. So, I have not marketed the thing. I sell about three books a quarter, to I have no idea whom

It seems we are forgetting about the most prolific form of self-publishing: 'zines!  I publish a 'zine called Jazz Qarterly at a wonderful organization called the Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) in Portland, OR; however, you do not need a publishing center, even, to write a 'zine.  Just get a photocopier and a long-arm stapler with your computer (perhaps with drawings, borders and clip art)  If you are fortunate enough to live near a big city, you may be able to find distributors ("distros") that you can sell your underground magazines at.  You probably won't get a huge profit, especially at first, but you will get the sensation that you are connecting with people.  If you do not live near a big city, you can always send your 'zine to Zine World, a magazine devoted to reviewing every 'zine they can get their hands on.
