This week at The Writer we're finishing up our most recent Attack of the Folders. This is my semi-affectionate phrase for the period every month when a swarm of white folders and 2-by-1 1/2-foot clear-plastic kits descends on our offices.
The current group of white folders contains the staff's first edits on most of the articles for our December issue. The kits, on the other hand, contain our last word-for-word edits on the articles in our November issue. One issue's headed out the door to the printer, while the other is headed to the art department to be designed.
The white folders and kits manage to descend upon us at about the same time every month, and all have a deadline attached. Editor Jeff Reich, Associate Editor Sarah Lange and I all edit the articles, making corrections and revisions as necessary, and pass them along to each other. Things can get a bit frenzied at times during kit & folder time, but screams and other outbursts have been surprisingly few over the years.
Does it feel a little weird editing December articles when it's around 80 degrees today at our digs in suburban Milwaukee? You bet.
