Interested in Short Stories
|

|

To The Writer Community ... I've been an avid reader for years and have only recently started paying attention to short stories. (Shameful, I know.) I honestly never thought that I would like the genre; but, I've found that for the most part I do. I would welcome any suggestions regarding worthwhile short story collections. I've purchased quite a few; but am interested in purchasing many more. Most recently, I've read How to Breathe Underwater by Julie Orringer (loved it) and Bring Me Your Saddest Arizona by Ryan Harty (haven't yet finished, but have mostly enjoyed thus far). I've also managed to acquire collections by Charles Baxter, Thomas Beller and Andre Dubus. I do own a few ... oh, what's the word ... anthologies, that's it! I've bought a couple of the Best Short Stories of ... collections and one O'Henry Prize collection. Please, please, please feel free to suggest many, many more. I would be most appreciative. Frederick Busch is a particular favourite of mine (his novels are great, too, esp. 'Girls'); Terrance Young's shorts are wonderfull crafted (hess Canadian) so are Patricia Young's - who may be his wife, but what do I know; anything by TC Caraghessan Boyle (sp?); Raymond Carver, of course; the Elizabeth Stories by ?Orser maybe?; go to the New Yorker website and check out the author of their short story of the week - many of the authors will have published a collection; any of the BASS collections will lead you to writers who may well have published collections; Lorrie Moore's Birds of America is a gem; British William Trevor is a master and is still coming up with a new book a year; Edna O'Brein's collection (80s?) Mrs. Reinhardt; Anthony Doerr's The Shell Collector... I could go on. It's a genre I love. Some of the best short stories I've ever read include Cathedral by Carver, The Silver Dish by Saul Bellow; The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick; Sins of Jesus by Isaac Babel; Lorrie M's People Like That are the Only People Here ..That should give you something to be going on with... Ms. Peterson, Thank you so much for the suggestions! The only one that I've read (from your list) is The Shawl; though I read it so long ago, I should revisit it. You are the first and only forum member to respond to any of my postings and I'm very appreciative. I'll be sure to check out as many of your suggestions as I can afford ... then I'll wait until I have a little more money and check out some more. I'll be sure to keep in touch, to let you know that your suggestions were taken seriously. Thanks Again, Cassie Rayvinonk ~ Creative Writing Student at the U of A

Hi, I recently read a Heritage Press book entitled "The Short Stories of O Henry" There are forty of his short stories in a nice cloth bound, dust covered book. I'll have to try to find some that were suggested.

If you are into noir at all, there is quite a collection of noir short story collections out there. The titles include: Manhattan Noir, Brooklyn Noir, Chicago Noir, etc. They really are great reads.

I recommend a writer, Japanese, named Haruki Murakami.
His short story collections are After the Quake, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman, and The Elephant Vanishes
All three collections are excellent.

I am also an avid short story reader. I have recently discovered that T.C. Boyle, the author of 'The Road to Wellville and The Tortila Curtain, is a very prolific and excellent short story writer. I would recomend- T.C. Boyle Stories and The Human Fly and other short stories.

I am presently writing a short story. Not easy. I't a real craft besides being an art. I love the short stories of Alice Munro, and there is a particularly well written story in the New Yorker, dated Jan. 14, 2008 by E. L. Doctorow, called Wakefield which I loved reading. You might enjoy it too. I'm sure library has it.
Although, even easier, you can go to the New Yorker website, www.newyorker.com and download it for free.
In fact, that is a good way to sample writers, and see what you like. They also featured Paul Theroux, who writes fiction which closely follows his life. I've gotten one of his latest novels from the library since I enjoyed his short story.
Check it out. It's also a good way to economize. Good luck!

I've found several magazines that have new short fiction from authors in the respective fields. If you have a particular favorite, genre-wise, see if you can find a magazine that has that. Universities including IU and University of Southern Indiana, to name a select few, put out collections that include short fiction. Tia Wood wrote: | | I haven't read many short stories. As far as fantasy, there's a magazine called Realms of Fantasy that publishes short fiction. I don't know of any for horror, but if you check a copy of Writer's Market, there'll be a list of different horror magazines and publications.

I second someone's suggestion of reading Murakami. He is an excellent writer.
Also, I've been reading a collection by Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting, called If you liked school, You'll love work which is excellent and his writing is so gripping.

Hey there! I love short stories, too. So much so that I wrote my own. At present, I have one out already--To Trust a Wicked Man. It is available at fictionwise. Three Christmas Kisses will be available December 15th. Here is the snippet of the review for To Trust a Wicked Man: "I recommend this book to anyone who wants a fast-paced read which will entice as well as captivate your interest. It is a great way to pass an afternoon or evening and will leave you with a euphoric feeling." Brenda Talley, The Romance Studio Tierney O'Malley http://tierneyomalley.com
