posting parts of a work in progress

I have several questions. I am new to posting on this forum and I am confused. I see that others have posted parts of thier books/works in progess for feedback from other writers. Are these works protected from plagerism? Aren't you afraid of others taking all your hard work and using it themselves? Should I post the first chapter of the novel I am working on? Please help a newbie and answer my questions. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry. First, I would think it virtually impossible to plagerize from a piece made public with your name on it. You have thousands of witnesses and a date stamped copy on-line.

Second, it is only an exceprt. Only you know where it's going.

The benefit of comment from other writers outweighs an almost nonexistent risk of having your work stolen.

I hope to see some of your work. All the best - Craven

Thanks for responding! Though I have a reader that has been kind enough to give objective opinions on my work, it would be very helpful to receive input from fellow writers. I will be posting my first chapter today. If you (or anyone else) has the time to read it I would love your feedback.
