Query Advice and Term for Subheads, in Articles?

Teslawriter 04-07-2008, 12:35 PM

Hi all, I want to submit an essay to a prestigious literary journal (I know, good luck, right?) and I want NOT to appear as ignorant as I really am.

I want to suggest a couple of possible subheads, in my query letter, and I cannot remember the term for them.

I'm not even sure "subheadings" is correct--what is the term for the bold, larger-than-normal text that you find, say midway in an extended article, where language the writer used is being highlighted, as a seminal quotation from the piece?  I know there's a term of art for this.

ALSO, can anyone suggest a few links to good sources of instruction on how to write a good query?  I want to submit the entire article "on spec," and I know people often use a "query letter" for an article that isn't yet written, but I'm sure I can adapt an article on "effective query letter writing" to fit my current endeavor.

Thanks, on and all, and best of luck!

Warmly,

Peter

First, what I don't know. I don't know what they call the highlighted text (bad guess - text box). It's probably better if you don't go into that detail in a query. Pitch the idea and concept. Your unique view, on whatever the topic, is what will probably sell the article, and the proof that you can write as evidenced by a well written query. Second, I write fiction so my advice on article and essay queries has little value. However, "The Writer" has a great article on winning magazine queries in this month's issue (May, I think). Take a look. -Good Luck
