what to charge for newsletters?

I have been writing newsletters for the martial arts schools I have trained in for many years. Wrote a departmental newsletter for my former job for several years, with worldwide distribution.

I have been writing magazine articles, for pay, but several people have mentioned that I should start writing newsletters for a living. Nice idea, but how do I charge?

I produce 4 or 8 page b/w newsletters, with minimal graphics that we print at Kinkos.I write most of the copy, with few exceptions.

How much should I charge for something like this? Per copy? Per issue?

Re: what to charge for newsletters?

Different organizations offer suggested pay rates for different writing work.

Although PWAC is Canadian, their list gives you an idea of the range. http://www.writers.ca/whattopay.htm

Also, Writing-World website has a good article 'How Much Should a Freelancer Charge' - http://www.writing-world.com/rights/fees.shtml

I'd always suggest an hourly rate rather than per issue as it will ensure you get paid for the time put in making changes suggested by the newsletter owner and accomodating any of the variables that you can't always plan on.

On the other hand, if it's a regular gig, once you've done two or three issues you have an overview of what each one takes and might come up with a price that is an average.

I do two newsletters right now. One's monthly and I charge a flat $450 an issue; the other's quarterly with more pages, I write more of the copy and use a more sohisticated layout, which usually comes in just under $1,000. My hourly rate rages from $25 - $65 depending on the who the client is and how much original research/writing/design is required.

Hope this helps.

I read your post with great interest. How does one go about acquiring clients to write newsletters for? What is the process you followed to get into this area of writing? It sounds like something I would really like to get into. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: what to charge for newsletters?

Newsletters would fall under the format of "zines," except they may be less artistic and more journalism-oriented.  Zines are mostly in a somewhat newsletter form, but involve a lot of cut-and-paste.  Although mostly done just for the passion of doing them, many people make a living if they treat their zine making as a business.  My best advice is to go places (if nowhere else your local library) and dig through the zines, until you find one that somewhat matches your format.  For example, I know of the zine "Socialist Appeal" that is a very decent well-marketed newsletter.  It's about 12 pages long.  However, it's only priced a dollar;  if you're serving a target audience and you know the product will sell, then if it's a 12 page newsletter of the same quality, charge more for it, and you might break even or even gain a little money!  It takes a while to learn the 'zine/newsletter craft, but it can be very rewarding.
