I queried a syndicate about a feature-length seasonal article and they said to send it. Well, I did, and now I'm feeling silly because I don't really know how these things work. I read on one syndicate's Website (for 600-word columns) that they post the story name and short description and then the newspapers that want to buy the column pay $20-40, and the writer gets half. I also talked with an established columnist who told me she self-syndicates (basically makes the arrangements with separate newspapers herself) and makes more. I'm thinking a feature-length article would go for a few hundred dollars (at least that's what I made on a similar article several years back) if I sold it directly to a newspaper. I've got 2 newspapers considering the article right now (in non-competing regions). Does anyone know how feature article syndication works?
