Best magazines and papers for writers breaking in??

Hello, everyone!

Greetings from centeral New Jersey! I'm new to the forums and look forward to learning all I can about the writing life from veterans and newbies alike.

I freelanced for a short period of time in 2000 but had to drop everything in order to take care of some medical concerns that came up. Six years later, I find myself in a situation where working from home would be more manageable for me than looking for a job that requires commuting. I don't drive, and mass transit around my part of the state is too inadequate to count on for work outside the home. I'm more than ready to begin working at something again and want to give freelancing another try.

That said, have any of you uncovered papers, magazines or Web publications that accept work from writers who are beyond the fledgeling stage but not experienced enough to have a wide variety of clips to submit with queries? It would be great if you could share your experiences with me so I can start off on the right foot.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Check out the market listings and magazine websites for info on what sort of submissions each accept. I've discovered that a number do take unknowns and new writers.

Good luck, I'm on the same track!

Try Writer Advice, www.writeradvice.com. Look at the information about the Third Annual Flash Prose Contest on the Home Page and click on Guidelines to see what else we are looking for. You'll earn credits for your resume and you'll have clips if you publish on Writer Advice. I hope this helps.

Definitely seek out mags that publish a high percentage of freelance work. Good luck! :)
