question of copyright and reprints

Years ago (1994) my first book contract provided for the publisher to file for copyright in my name. When the book came out the publisher was listed as the copyright owner.  When questioned they had truly filed for the copyright in their name in error but just gave me a letter transferring all rights back to me with an apology.  The book only sold the initial printing and a second printing was never done so all of my books showed someone else as the copyright owner.  To add insult to injury I was on Amazon.com the other day and pulled up a copy of my book that was published in 1996 - 2 years after the book first came out - published by large publisher in England.

I wonder if anyone has ever had this happen to them and the correct way this should have been corrected.  Also, since it appears that other publishing rights were sold that I never received any compensation for, or had knowledge of, is it too late to ask for an audit and compensation?

Your best bet would be to contact an attorney and show him the contract and all the information you have, then let them tell you what you can do legally.
