Market listings

Hi.  Writer looking to start freelancing for magazines, and I need a good source of market listings, and the listings on this site are very much out of date.

I've been given a list of collected market listing books, but I'm not sure which one(s) would have the most accurate listings for the genres I write for; speculative fiction, computers and technology, and video games.

If anyone has suggestions for complete market listing sources, please post them.

Re: Market listings

Hi Supergeek,

I usually go to the local stores and look at their magazine racks.  When I find a magazine that I'm interested in, I quickly glance through it for content.  If I still like it, I'll get the editor's name, address or the email address, and request guidelines.  All of this information is listed in the magazine.  By looking at the published magazine itself, you'll know immediately if it's really what you want.  Seeing the actual magazine is so much more effective that looking at a list.  Anyway, it works for me.

Re: Market listings

Bob, thanks for the reply.

I had already planned on doing that kind of research, but I know that there are a lot of smaller or regional magazines that I'm just not going to find by looking at my local bookstores.  For that, I'll have to rely on some sort of market listing compilation.

Re: Market listings

Lots of listings at New Pages - esp. markets you might not find ont he mainstream newsstands http://newpages.com/

Worldwide Freelance Writers has two databases - one you pay for, but another free one that lists quite a few markets. http://www.worldwidefreelance.com/markets2.htm

Here's another http://www.writemarket.com/

More here: http://www.freelancewriting.com/guidelines/pages/

And I'd always prefer online info. as it's more likely to be up to date than a print directory.

Another way to discover hundreds of publications is to go to Ebsco - an online database that you can probably access through your local library website. Click on the Publications button. Some listings will incude a hot link to the website, but even those that don't will give you a lead you can follow by Googling the publication name and fiinding their website that way.

Also, the Writer's own website includes market listings. But you knew that...

Hope this helps.
