Editing for an academic

This is a bit off grammar and more towards style. Though I have been successful with other academics as editor and writing coach, am becoming very frustrated with one professor who insists on using quotation marks around words he would emphasize when lecturing, using italics and bold until they have no meaning.

Have tried to encourage him to use words closer to his actual meaning.  Any help you can offer would be most appreciated.

Re: Editing for an academic

Hi Clio,

If the professor needs to have his lecture notes edited, he probably needs more help than you can give him.  Does this professor have a God complex?

Have you tried to return his notes back to him with the quotation marks, the italics, and the bold face type - only correcting for sentence structure and spelling?  After all, they are his lecture notes and he can probably understand his own meanings as he has written them.

Have you placed the notes side by side, his notes and your edited ones?  If he is thoughtful and considerate, maybe he will see the problems that his writing is causing.  If not, then nothing will change.  Sorry.     ~   Bob
