Novel Writing Software?

A question I would like to put to you- Is using a software program like NewNovelist, helpful for starting out a novel? Structure wise? Is ANY software program that would assist a new novelist for that matter good? Or is this like, how shall I say it; . . . cheating?  Comments please. Thanks.

Re: Novel Writing Software?

I've tried out the trial software for many of the programs and have not been impressed.  They 1) charge $50 and up for something I can do in existing word processing software; 2) make extra work doing things that I don't need to do (one where it did the Myers-Brigg code for characterization comes to mind); or 3) force me to write the way the developer thinks I should write, not the way I write.

Granted, some of the programs do help with organization skills for building books, but again, a lot of that can be done by using a word processing program and finding the best way to work for you.

What they aren't: They can't guarantee that by using them you will get published.

If you decide you want to go with a program, download a free trial version first and try it out before you buy it.

Utter and complete waste of time. The only way to become a better writer is to write, and to learn from your mistakes. Notice that the people who make these programs haven't even made a name for themselves, so how can you expect them to make a name for you? If you're writing well right now, then just keep going, don't pause for such a destructive thing as writing software. If you're in a slump, then you're looking in the wrong place. If you're doing it for the research, spend the money on Microsoft Student. Remember, only you can write the way you do.

Re: Novel Writing Software?

Linda,

I totally agree.  I've not found any writing software that has really been a help to me.  They smother my creativity and do not really give me any guidance with my writing.  I think the money is better spent on books on writing that give you much guidance and many tips.  As for ideas for a story or characterization, look around you.  I get more out of these books and the articles in the writing magazines than any software out there.

Re: Novel Writing Software?

Hi Searcher,

While I agree with the other posters that software does not make you a writer, I do use WriteWay and it helps me organize my thoughts. Part of the challenge is determining how your thoughts are organized and then finding software that suits you.  WriteWay is essentially a word processor, but has handy ways of organizing information.  You can write an outline for example and keep it handy on a split screen while you write, or you can keep electronic "notecards" for each chapter or scene on different topics - setting, character, etc.  It also tracks your word count against your goals, formats the manuscript, and easily exports to word.

Again, it's no miracle worker - but it has helped me stay organized.  Good luck.
