Looking for good outlets for used books for writers
Besides Amazon on the Internet, has anyone found another good source or two for good used books for writers like short story techniques, writing novels, books for dialogue, etc? Thanks in advance for your pointing for me. Bill

Writer's Digest has a bookstore and you can google some of the used book stores in your area (or even bookstores in general). Some there may have a website you can visit if you don't want to visit the store in person.

Try searching Ebay's listings for books about writing.   If there is not a Ebay listing, check some of the Ebay stores which often offer a much wider variety of items

Check Overstock.com - sometimes they have some excellent deals on many items including books of all kinds.

This isn't a plug for Writer's Digest book club but at the present, they are offering a special introductory offer of four books for the cost of one (adds up to about twenty bucks including s&h) with no requirements to buy in future.  You would, however, receive monthly offers and have to respond to prevent being sent unwanted books but it's not a bad deal if you want to build up your own stock of writing books.  The website is www.WritersDigestBooks.com and the offer is current to new members.

At Amazon you are referred to quite a number of affiliates who are sellers of used books.  I've usually found that the prices offered through their Amazon listing are identical to what you would find if you contacted the booksellers directly.

Other online favorites of mine are alibris.com (though mostly for books of the rarer varieties), and alldirect.com (which is often cheaper than Amazon).

It's a bit hard to "browse" book collections on the Internet, though, to find something you might want to buy.  Much easier to look for a specific title or author.  That's why I prefer hanging around a real used bookstore.

Like Bob, I prefer real, used book stores but for those of us who live in the hinterlands or backwoods, real book stores are seldom nearby.  A trip to an excellent and actual used book store for me can require from an hour to four hour jaunt (one way) so cyber shopping has its' appeal!

Living near Seattle, it would be hard for me not to find a used book store. How stupid does that sound?

I really like this site: http://www.bestwebbuys.com/books/

It searches "dozens" of online  bookstores that sell used books and compares prices. I have used them often and have almost never been unable to find the book I was looking for.  This site searches manu online used book stores and shows you prices from each, allowing you to compare prices.  It's great!

I have found that http://www.half.com (a subsidiary of eBay, direct buying and no bidding) offers an extensive selection of books, new and used at excellent prices with media mail shipping.  I generally have two IE windows open so that I can compare prices with other vendors such as Amazon or Overstock.  I especially like that media mail is offered for shipping, which also helps cut down on costs. My experience has been that USPS media mail shipping is about as fast as USPS first class. Due to the fact that a large number of the listed items are from private collections, I have been able to purchase out of print books which I could not find on any other internet site and at a low price. Book sellers also list on this site, but I try to order from a private seller with a high feedback rating. The majority of my book purchases have been from this site and I have yet to be disappointed.

The ultimate source for used/rare books -- http://www.vialibri.net/

I love this site because it is a meta search of used book stores (online and offline) both national and international. Definitely the place to go for serious readers with limited funds.

One of the best sources I've found is Bookfinder.com (http://www.bookfinder.com). It will even find out-of-print books--and many out of print books for writers are still excellent resources. If you know and author's name or book's title, enter it. If not, enter "writing"  (or whatever you're looking for) in the title field

Here's where you can find NEW books at deep discounts:

EdwardRHamilton.com

Check the reference book section for books about writing. They offer a lot of Writers Digest books at deep discounts.

Best of all, shipping is a flat rate of just $3.50 anywhere in the US, no matter how many books you order.
