Types of chic-lit

I was wondering if any of you work in a broader definition of the term or do you stick to the pretty trditional 'type'? I used to do romance (in addition to trying my hand at a dozen different genre over the years) but I think I got too jaded so I moved to chic-lit; I'm more comfortable with the sarcasm, wit and cynicism. I tend to dabble in a variety of styles.

I actually have a bit of trouble with the twenty-nine year old heroine who thinks she's getting old and is getting desperate for a "mate". Maybe because I'm 44 and married with teenage daughters. I've been playing with Mommy-lit (I think that's what it's called) and also more of a chic-lit/mystery type thing, and I have an idea for a gay chic-lit (fem-lit I think it might be called).

Does anyone else work outside of the 'Bridget Jones' type chic-lit? Not that I don't enjoy it, although I liked the other book she came out with last year that has nothing to do with Bridget, much more - (I'm sorry I am completely blanking on the name even though I really liked it - something to do with 'Olivette' maybe,  and a woman trying to be a legit reporter)

You're actually only talking about one subgenre of it.  There's a a lot of subgenres, depending on the audience.  The basic requirement seems to be that they are books written for women by women.  Here are some of the subgenres:

  • Bigger Girl Lit
  • Christian Lit
  • Glamour Lit
  • Hen Lit
  • Lad Lit
  • Mom Lit
  • Multi-Cultural Lit
  • Mystery Lit
  • Thriller Lit

What about something called "Women's fiction?" I think of this as stories about older women (over 50, say). Usually they are either recently widowed, or have just gotten divorced because they discovered their husbands were cheating on them, or are contemplating divorcing the jerk.

Is this what is meant by women's fiction?
