Disaster Response

The challenge is to write a short, short, story about response in a disaster situation.

You must include: a mode of transportation, the need for a quarter, and several sentences in a foreign language that must make sense to someone that does not read or speak in that language.

Re: Disaster Response
Hmmm.  Nothing like as easy challenge, is there?  I apologize in advance for several things:
No copyright/trademark for Juicy Fruit gum, no upside down question mark for the Spanish phrase, and all mispellings as my browser doesn't do very well on spell checking foreign phrases.

"Buenas Dias!  Bienvenue!  Velkommen!  Hello!  Is anyone there?"
I polled the flat bottomed Jon boat through the dark city streets looking for any sign of life.  I had loaded it with as much food, water and medicine as I thought safe to carry.  Now I was just trying to find someone to give it to.

My mouth had become so dry from shouting out to the dark and damaged homes that I was chewing on some Juicy Fruit gum to keep my vocal cords moist.  Turning into another block of homes, I tried again:  "?Se Hables Engles?",  "Spieken Deutsche?", "Parlez-vous Francais?"

Suddenly I noticed a small hole in the bottom of the boat.  Water was beginning to enter at an alarming speed.  Thinking fast, I reached into my pocket for a quarter and pulling the gum from my mouth, I wrapped it around the quarter and put the quarter over the hole.  It was a perfect fit and immediately stopped the leak.  Now I could continue on my mission of trying to help out these poor people in some small way.   What I had wasn't much, but I hoped it would be enough, if only for one or two people.  At least they'd know someone cared enough to do more than just sit around and talk while pointing at dramatic looking pie charts.

Re: Disaster Response

I loved your last line!! Made me chuckle!

I've read lots of books with trade-mark names in them, and no disclaimers.  Do we have to get written permission to use them in stories and books if it's in a posative manner?

Disaster Response

The forum is no longer fun.  I've deleted my posting, no one cared to read or comment anyway.
