A friend of my boss has hired me to write a murder mystery story (like the murder mystery dinners) about the coffee house. He said he could order a kit, but he'd rather involve me. I was flattered and have some ideas, but I'm not sure how to go about it. What would be the best way to go about this?

Aargh. Tough one.

Okay, here's all I can think of:

Research online. There are companies that do this professionally, and I'll be their websites will give you an idea of how it all works. You might even be able to contact them for suggestions, who knows?

Read The Edge by d*** Francis. If you've got time. This book is based on exactly that premise: people putting on a mystery for entertainment. He researches the heck out of his stuff and works that research in, so you could learn lots from him. It's not a huge book, thankfully, and d***'s a fast read. Bonus if you like horse racing!

Look for books at the library or bookstore. Someone, somewhere, has to have written a book on how to write these things: they were a craze for a while.

Good luck, and feel free to bounce ideas off my noggin if it'll help!

Dana

Thanks, Dana! I've done a little research, and it's helped a lot already! I'll let you know how it's going!

Right now, I'm still pretty excited about having my first paid writing job!
