RE: Treasure Book
the jewelled figures are lovely (saw him interviewed on FOX!) but it's a LOT of money to put into a project like that... good thing he had another successful company to suck money out of to publish this one, says I.

hope he can get a return on those baubles if they don't get found and interest wears off...

:)

RE: Treasure Book
just another example of feeding greed!... it's disgusting, imo... and sadly, very american... been done before in books, stories, and even jigsaw puzzles... i hope they lose money on it, but fear they won't...

RE: Treasure Book
This has been done at least two or three times before with books. What the heck, it's his money, and if he wants to have fun with it, let him. If people do find these tokens, at least some of the wealth will be spread around.

But I wouldn't call it an American idea. This same kind of thing is one of the most popular worldwide sports right now. Who doesn't like a contest? Who doesn't like unraveling a mystery? Who doesn't like the quest for buried treasure? Who wouldn't like to find one or two of thsoe tekens and swap it for a bejeweled treasure?

I can think of many worse ways he could spend his money, and tracking down those tokens has to be more fun than another weekend watching TV/

Millions do this sort of thing every day, even when the prize is a bauble you aren't allowed to keep.

I think it's cute and fun. Who doesn't like a treasure hunt?

Actually, I think it would be a pretty fun idea, and I could see why people would jump at it. I don't necessarily see it so much as greed in trying to find the jewels, but I see it as a bunch of people who like the challenge of a good puzzle. (C'mon, we all know deep down that everyone wants to be a detective [;)]). Sounds like a fun idea, especially if he has the money to go ahead and do it.

Do you think they really are real jewels?

for the record, i didn't 'call it an american idea'... just said it was 'very american'.. as in the greed factor and wanting something for nothing and folks making a pile off same... could have said it's 'very human' too... but the business angle still seems like part of the american nature more than other national cultures' to me... having lived in many other parts of the globe i just see stuff like this being more in the american 'character' than others'...

Personally, I think that the idea that greed is a common trait of the average American is something propogated by the media. They show the culture that way, but honestly, the every day Americans that I know and have met in my travels are mostly genuine, down-to-earth good people. There are people consumed with greed in every culture, so I don't think it is just a typically American problem. Like I say, the average person isn't the way the media portrays the society.

RE: Treasure Book
Being the very practical sort that I am, my first thought was that if these tokens are in very public places and require no digging, how can he be sure that someone won't come upon one or two by accident? Is there some safeguard against that? Even if someone doesn't know to redeem it, if I read correctly,(and I admit I just scanned the article) the tokens themselves are 14 carat gold.

I didn't get the sense that he is doing this to sell books–– it would be hard to make a profit. I just think some people like to be in the public eye and sought after.
