There all so good, I don't know which one to post about. Where one fails, the others easily fill in.

I would have to say Lord of the Rings is the best-written (and likely the most timeless). I absolutely loved Harry Potter (and bravo to Rowling for getting more people to read books). I haven't read Artimus Fowl yet, and I tried Eragon, but I never got into it. Is it true that it borrowed many ideas from LOTR?

I would agree with you about Lord of the Rings. Harry Potter is good enough that I've broken the hard cover books I've read them so much. You relly should read Atimus Fowl. It's truly original, though I'd suggest keeping a dictionary by you when you read it. Eragon didn't borrow ideas from LOTR intentionally, but you really can't write at all today without having many ideas like other books go into yours. Eragon borrows more from Anne McCaffery's Pern series. Have you read any of those?

I have to say harry potter is my all time favourite, i got my little brother to read it and now we can actualy have a real conversation that makes sense, I haven't read LOTR yet. Is it true that most people who enjoy Harry potter do not like LOTR?

Dunno... I like Harry Potter, but i'm not that fond of Lotr... not my kind of book... too much in too little... Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Dragonriders of pern and all the Star Wars books to name some, those i love... especially the star wars books...

haven't read Eragon, but i just read Artemis Fowl 3... very entertaining as always... i don't really like the ending tho...

I didn't like the ending of the 3rd artimus fowl either. I haven't read all of the LOTR books, but I intend to

I loved both Harry Potter and LOTR...but they're not really easy to compare. They are both fantasy, but other than that, they are written so differently. I personally recommend that anyone who hasn't read LOTR to try it.

I agree that anyone who has never read The Lord of the Rings should do so at least once in their lives-- after reading The Hobbit, of course. (That is a biased recommendation, though; I was a sci-fi/fantasy reader from the cradle.) J. R. R. Tolkien was not a PERFECT writer; there are a lot of inconsitencies in the aforementioned novels, despite repeated edits. He was, however, a creative and engaging writer. If you can wade through the dense parts, the novels are wonderfully imaginative and well worth the time committment involved.

Re: Harry Potter-- the series is great. The books do not patronize the audience, and the humour is a great plus.

I think that some of the traditional fantasy fare for the younger readers is too often neglected nowadays due to the fanfare surrounding more recent books. Whatever happened to Madeleine L'Engle and C. S. Lewis?

going to put my vote in here for Fowl - I haven't read HP other than seeing the movies and was spoilt rotten by reading LoTR when I was ten, but I think the Fowl series is a great read for those who want to go a bit off the beaten track for fantasy.

having the main character a genius kid with little scruples was interesting, to say the least, and the entire LEP storyline (you'll have to read it!) was a welcome new view on the old, old tale.

grab a paperback if you can!

peas, out!

[#ditto]

Especially Clive Staples "Jack" Lewis who along with JRR Tolkein was a member of the Inklings.

Rosarium who got hooked on the Chronicles of Narnia at a very early age

RE: Harry Potter, Artimus Fowl, Eragon, Lord of the Rings
I've read all four and have to say the Harry Potter series is my favourite so far, purely for Rowling's talent in story telling and her extensive imagination (although the fifth book was somewhat disappointing). I wish I could jump into her brain for a day or two!

I didn't enjoy Eragon as I felt it was far too predictable, and the writing annoyed me greatly. I'm unlikely to read the next two books in this trilogy.

As for Artemis Fowl, I found it immensely difficult to get into mainly because I didn’t like any of the characters, so after the first two books, I gave up. It is a highly original idea though.

Lord of the Rings...I managed to read the first one but I found the endless pages of description to be quite detrimental to my attention span! I much prefer watching the films.

I adore Harry Potter and Artimus Fowl. I read them both eagerly.
But as for Lord of the Rings. Well, I never read the book, but my father does posess the 13 gold, limited edition cassettes. Which I have listened to. And thoroughly enjoyed.
I can't say much for the films though. But I shant go into another rant about that, as it's very off topic.

Yes. I can barely wait for the 6th Harry Potter book to come out. The only down side is that I will cry at the thought of there only being one more book left to look forward to. But I then again, there is no fun in milking something is there? Such like most of today's T.V series.

Potter is creative, cute--fun to read. But it lacks the depth, breadth, and symbolism one finds in Hobbit/LOTR.

Harry Potter amuses me--LOTR often brings tears of joy, deep sighs of longing for a better place--LOTR will live on as classic literature.

Speaking of which--do not neglet CSLewis' works--the Space Trilogy (Out of the SIlent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength) is different from LOTR but wicked good. Great characterizations, evokative places, well-plotted stories written by a lover of words and languages.

Charles Williams is the third member of "The Inklings" (Tolkien & Lewis constituted the balance of their discussion/writing group.) If you can find any of his fantasies--they are far-out fiction--to be read at a rapid pace the first time. Heavy stuff!

I liked Harry Potter, but I would have to say that LOTR is one of the best books ever written! I've haven't read Eragon yet, but it sounds good.

We can all argee that LOTR is a great book and so are the Harry Potter series but i think that Eragon is my favorite of the books in this forum. I have read all of the artimus fowl books and i think they are great, i did think the ending of the last bookwas good though. LOTR are classic books and I think they are better writen then the Harry Potter books. And i am looking forward to reading The Eldest (the second Erason book) and the next Harry Potter book.

Of the four mentioned books, I can only say that I have read the Lord of the Rings trilogy -- and the Hobbit, Silmarillion, First Book of Lost Tales, and Unfinished Tales. I am convinced that I would appreciate Tolkien's work the most even if I read the other books. There is a depth of beauty...a passion, in Tolkien's brilliant work, that calls out of me intense feelings, often ambivalent.
Perhaps you are thinking - and perhaps it be true - that I am favorably inclined toward Tolkien because I have not read many books of fantasy by other authors. I cannot deny the effect on me that my mother, and later my brother, reading Tolkien's books to me when I was too young to read was an impact that brought a high regard for him; but, having read the books again myself, I was convinced that there was something deeper in them -- something that other books I have read failed to capture. I admire Tolkien for this.
The long narratives without dialogue - which, I won't hide, have bored me in the past - are, in my opinion, to Tolkien's credit. That he focuses so carefully on terrain and on geography reveals a distinct respect and love for nature in the author. I strive in my own writing to focus in a similar way, but I often fail to catch the depth of the stunning beauty in the gentle soaring of an eagle, or the delicacy of a tender flower.
For all my shortcomings, I admire Tolkien and aspire to the level of skill he attained.

RE: Harry Potter, Artimus Fowl, Eragon, Lord of the Rings
I love Harry Potter (despite expectations!), I started reading it for 'market research' LOL
And well, I was duly impressed, both me and my sister were dragged into the series!!

I read Artemis Fowl (book 1) before HP and loved it, but didn't think too much of book 2, haven't read book 3 yet. I preferred 'Wish List' by the same author!! Great book!!

LOTR = great obsession of my sister, so I gave it a try. Was greatly disappointed with the movie (no. 1), IMO it really makes sense only if you read the book, then you keep looking forward to seeing 'old friends' and known scenes... (saw it again later)
Loved the part about walking trees, and several other parts, but too boring in my opinion to read it 'whole-way-through'. I kept jumping (started with the middle of book 2, and was later curious enough about other things to read all 3). He did weave a great fantasy world though and well, gains my due respect.
Not the least for writing those big fat books!!

Don't know Eragon.

my vote is for Artimis (this is actually how you spell it for the series, not Artimus. yeah, confusing). even tho I love HP and Eragon, my vote is still for the Fowl series. its perfect for my type of personality. as for LOTR, the first book, put me to sleep in 10 minutes, when I was fully awake when I started reading it.
