Need to find a gift for a writer?
The holiday season is just around the corner, and I’m usually scrambling until the last minute to find the perfect gift for everyone. In my household my behavior leads to much tearing of hair and much gnashing of teeth (my husband’s) accompanied by his helpful (?) suggestions about sending cheese and sausage gift packs to one and all. By the end of the gift-buying season I’m almost ready to give up and take his advice. But I’m feeling hopeful this year. It’s going to be different. I’m going to be prepared and all gifts will be bought, wrapped and mailed with time to spare. Yes, I’m into fairytales these days. Well, if I can’t help myself maybe I can at least help someone else by listing some ideas that make great gifts for writers: • The Bookrageous Calendar: an 18-month calendar populated with pictures of booksellers/bloggers promoting their favorite books. The proceeds from the calendar go to support First Book, an organization that gives books to children in need. • A gift card from your local independent bookstore. To find an independent bookstore in your area, check the Indie Store Finder on IndieBound.org. • If it’s an elegant gift you’re looking for, try Levenger. Billed as “tools for serious readers," Levenger offers briefcases, totes, journals, pens and many more items that would please writers. .
• Purely fun gifts: If you’re looking for a clever t-shirt, coffee mug, mousepad or necktie, you can find plenty of options at Zazzle. • For the ladies: Take a look at Shakespearesden.com for jewelry inscribed with quotes from Shakespeare or Oscar Wilde or Jane Austen. Another option: Do a Google search for “typewriter key jewelry.” There are many artists who have found creative ways to recycle old typewriter keys to make necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more. • Last, but not least: Why not send or renew a subscription to The Writer magazine? I've heard it's loaded with great advice for writers!
What are your gift ideas?
Happy Holidays--and good luck with your shopping!

In my article in the December edition of the UK's Writers' News magazine I explained how to make an Ideas Box as a gift for a fellow writer. In brief, take a shoebox and fill it with writing prompts - pictures, character names, setting descriptions etc. The recipient than has a ready supply of ideas when Writers' Block strikes!

Sally -- that's a great idea for a gift! And handmade gifts are really special, too. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Great ideas Martha! I'll have to pass this list along to the hubby, (with a big Hint-Hint). ;)
The perfect gift for any writer, (in my humble opinion), is Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird, an absolute must have!
Thanks so much for the ideas and the links!
